The Brown Horse Inn

My husband and I have just spent 3 nights at The Brown Horse, Winster, we couldn't fault it at all! The room and bed were extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was amazing and the restaurant/ bar food in the evening was superb, make sure to book your table on a Saturday, it was very busy!

Popped in for lunch and we had fish and chips after reading reasonable Google reviews and rated at 4.7 stars. The pub is pleasant, albeit perhaps ready for a refresh in terms of decor. Upon receiving the fish and chips, the first thought was wow what a large fish. Unfortunately, first impressions then turned to major disappointment. The fish was actually a very small fillet surrounded by masses of batter, which whilst crispy was too much with a tiny fish and sickly. Mushy peas were a dollop in a dish hard and probably scooped cold and microwaved for 15 seconds as were less than Luke warm and flavourless. The tartar sauce was homemade and flavourful and perhaps the star of the plate. Service was swift however only 6 other people were using the pub at the time. We were not asked what we thought of our meals at any time by the staff who whilst pleasant I think knew that their food was sub-standard and could see we had left masses of batter and chips. This in my opinion is a pub selling mediocre meals pretending to be a gastro pub and charging gastro pub prices. Nearly £19 for fish and chips should be lovely, this wasn't. Two miles away is the Hare and Hounds pub which is fabulous in every respect and charges similar prices.

Delightful stay at the Brown Horse Inn, 5 minutes drive from Lake Windermere in a quiet location. Very popular - always a good sign. We had a lovely room (No 5) with views over the fields and rolling hills. Nothing was too much trouble and David gave us some good advice about where to go, including Beatrix Potter's house, Hill Top and the flagship Lakeland store which were close by. Excellent dinner in the evening (including a truly amazing cheese & almond souffle) and a delicious full English breakfast the following morning. Our thanks to Jake, Lucy, Michael, Craig, David & Shaun the award-winning chef! Parking is available at the rear, there's a beer garden in front (great views from the terrace) and a play area for kids at the back. We'd love to stay again one day.

We booked a meal for Thursday 25th July. We were spending 5 days in Bowness. It had a good choice of menu. We all picked different meals.The Staff were very friendly and helpful. We all enjoyed our meals very much and would return again. I would recommend it.

The food is delicious and staff are lovely and friendly. Rooms are comfortable and clean . The bar area and restaurant are great . Breakfast is good although on a personal note , I would like to have avacado as a choice . Toilets in bar are looking a bit tired and old compared to rest of facilities .

Had dinner on high recommendation. However, I was so disappointed with my meal. I had a crispy chicken burger, which look fabulous, I May add, but OMG it was the most tasteless bland chicken burger I have ever eaten. Absolutely no seasoning or flavour in the chicken or the breadcrumbs! My husband had the haddock, which was nice, but too much batter. Staff very friendly, service spot on.
