The location is a 5 min car/taxi ride or 15 minute walk from Datong South station so the ancient city is a 20 min car/taxi ride away; be sure to add breakfast as there are no food options nearby. However, if you're visiting the grottoes and/or have an earlier train ticket, this location is perfect. I would stay here again.
