The temperature in the room was much higher than in the hallway and outside. The temperature on the day I stayed was between 15-20 degrees Celsius, and it was 15 degrees at night when I went to sleep. However, by midnight, the room was still as hot as 30 degrees, much hotter than the outside during the day, making it impossible to sleep. A fan was provided, but it was very old and noisy.

This hotel looked lovely on line but didn't live up to expectations. room was very basic, there was paint peeling off the walls ,pulled curtains back mould and dirt wasn't great.cleaning wasn't up to scratch.such a shame as my mum paid for this as a treat for my birthday . The staff were fine and it's in a great location but wouldn't go back

How this place rates as a 4 star hotel beggars belief. To get access to my room I had to climb up two flights of very narrow, steep and winding stairs. Fortunately I only had a small bag ~ it would have been impossible with anything bigger, like a suitcase for example. I was offered no help whatsoever. The room itself was adequate, tiny TV, three (!) fans but no fridge. Very basic, very standard accommodation ~ certainly not 4 star.

I wasn’t sure whether to start with the positives or negatives …… on the plus side this place has an amazing history , and its location is brill - it’s set back up a teeny little alley way , that if you blink you might well miss. It’s quiet - even though located centrally it is exceptionally quiet due to its location. Staff are friendly , nothing is too much trouble and even though there are several rooms you do feel as if you have the place to yourself. The rooms are lovely - individual and quirky - very clean. However I feel the rooms do need more attention , hence the few negatives I have. The photos online imply the place is luxurious - they are very good pics. Please note there is nothing wrong with the rooms as such , they are adequate. However high end they are not. We had a mirror that had a strap as a feature - the tack had come out of the wall so the strap simply hung. A two minute fix - that hadn’t been attended to. The four poster bed had a stave missing at the top. The fridge was not the best - it did not keep items cold ( I should have mentioned this on leaving and forgot - perhaps this can be remedied for future guests ) Also the rooms were sparsely decorated - no soft furnishings, no pictures on the walls …… lovely original fireplace that could have benefitted from some dressing up maybe ….. I don’t know I’m not a designer it all just felt a bit bare. The bathroom however was superb , the bathroom itself did feel high end , it’s a pity the room itself did not match up. On a practical level - parking wise I would recommend dropping luggage off as it is quite a trek to the recommended car park at Mary Gate particularly with cases. In all I would recommend a stay here - the negatives I have are superficial , and nothing that could not be addressed with very little effort.

The positives were the lovely building and the staff, especially Ewan who helped me with the coffee machine as there were no instructions. Lovely fresh towels and comfy bed. Great location. The negatives were that it really needs a good clean,sofa and carpet were dirty and it looked like blood on a wall! 4 coat hangers with no drawers to put your stuff in and we were there for 3 nights so ended up hanging my dresses on a fan. No fridge in room and disposable plastic tumblers. Heating is pre set so comes on when they want it too. Had to climb up 4 flights of stairs so not good if you have mobility problems. Wine on arrival did not exist! Have gave it 3* for the history and the building.

The hotel itself is in a great location ...UNFORTUNATELY that's where it ends..The reason I'm writing this review is the fact me and my wife was woken at 6.30 am due to beer kegs getting delivered....This went on for a 2 full hours..Absolutely ridiculous..On departure I mentioned to to reception and she did apologise bit unfortunately it's due to been in the city centre..I wasn't happy with this so was told to email manager..On arriving home I contacted the manager to get a reply saying they can do nothing about due it been city centre FULL STOP.. I wasn't happy with this but unfortunately just got ignored on the next 2 emails explaining I've stop in alot of city's over the years and never experienced anything like this..Also this is never mentioned on there WEBSITE.. Keep clear of this place if you like sleeping a little after 6.30 am..

When arrived were told had two reservations. I showed the reservation number I had and was told there was another reservation with different number for the next month. I DID NOT make 2 reservations! I was forced to pay for 2 reservations to stay. Given the arrival time and lack of a car I had no other option. They would not cancel the second reservation. I believe their system booked the second reservation.

All the staff were lovely and the location is perfect, within walking distance of lots of the attractions. There were plenty of toiletries, spare towels and amenities. There were no disturbances from light in the morning, or any noise. Would definitely stay again!
