This was the only pet friendly motel we could find in Hazleton. The pet fee seemed reasonable, but the $140+tax cost was outrageous. Let’s start by walking down the hall: the first thing we noticed was a stale smoke smell which permeated everything. This had clearly been a motel which allowed smoking for a number of years, but took no pains to remove that smell after banning smoking. Upon entering the room, we thought it judicious to wipe everything down with Clorox wipes to be sure that the surfaces were as clean as they could be. We tried to open the closet door but couldn’t because the luggage stand had fallen and wedged the door mostly shut. Clearly, cleaning staff hadn’t looked into the closet for a while because they couldn’t. The refrigerator had not been cleaned; consequently, there was some sort of melted, sticky toxic waste in the bottom. The furnishings are typical low end motel stock, satisfactory and in fairly good shape. There was a stain on the cushion of the easy chair, but that was balanced by the gift of a half empty water bottle and small bottle of cough syrup we found under it. The light fixtures all appeared to work. The bathroom shows the typical signs of aging – cracked, yellowing and missing caulk, peeling wallpaper and rust forming at the bottom of the door frames. (see the photo taken at the corner of the tub and wall.) The mirror over the sink had not been cleaned. The motel seems to be popular with work crews, but we suspect the business rate their employers are paying is being subsidized by the rate charged to the public. It was a sad disappointment, and we won’t be returning.
