My wife and I stayed here as part of a birthday weekend away. I booked the hotel based on positive reviews and also figured that, at £275 for the night, it should be awesome. It isn't - it's a rather mixed bag unfortunately. It's an entirely nice pub - the staff are friendly, the building is lovely, the restaurant is decent. The room we had was a really good size in an outbuilding so it had a little sitting room area and a four poster bed plus a bathroom. Is it worth the very much boutique price of £275? Not by a long way I'm afraid. Whilst the room wasn't dirty, it wasn't exactly clean.... it was incredibly dusty - if you lifted the valance sheet a little to expose the bedframe there was, at a rough estimate, *years* of dust on the bed frame, on the tops of the frame of the four poster bed and if you looked at the light fitting / anywhere towards the ceiling you were faced with a fair few cobwebs and dust. There were two shower heads (a rain shower and a hand). The hand shower was caked with mould and the silicone around the bath / tile grout was similarly in need of a refresh. Sheets, towels etc were all spotlessly clean as you'd expect but the attention to detail in a £275 room really wasn't there. The meal in the restaurant was very nice - I'd give that four stars. It was 'as expected' price wise for an up-market pub and the quality / service was decent. Breakfast has to be ordered - you fill in a form the night before with the time you want it and what you'd like from a limited menu. Unusual but not a major issue however the order still came out wrong despite it being written down the night before. We had to ask for milk for the (ordered) cereal and they completely forgot the toast (got it after asking at the end). My wife was brought a full English rather than poached eggs on toast as requested. The quality of my cooked breakfast was fine but nothing special which was disappointing considering the meal from the previous night being rather better! If you're after porridge, pastries, croissants etc then forget it - the choice is OK but a little old fashioned and again not in line with the pricing / positioning of the establishment. The do make eggs benedict and a couple of other choices but there is a small supplement beyond what you've already paid..... Upon checkout, we noticed a £7.50 'room cleaning charge' on the bill. We expressed our opinion that this is highly unusual and said that, considering the room wasn't actually clean, this was really not called for. The lady apologised, thanked us for our feedback and took this off / reduced the bill by £30. She told us the regular housekeeper was off and that they were relying on a 'younger team'. I gave no comment to this but frankly if you're running a place and have a new team, I'd respectfully suggest that educating them on what's expected would be a better approach than throwing them under the bus when a customer complains.
