Barberstown Castle

We went for a wedding: this hotel does a LOT of weddings and exceptionally well too. We stayed two nights and had an excellent time. The rooms are expensive (Irish hotels are) but this was worth it. The rooms are huge and well-appointed and our bathroom practically as large as our bedroom at home. And everyone else’s rooms seemed likewise. The breakfasts were great and the wedding catering excellent: the beef main course was very fine and then they came round with second steaks - though I don’t see how anyone managed two. The two aspects that really stood out were the exceptional surroundings with beautiful flowers everywhere and the really delightful staff team: nothing seemed too much trouble and there were a lot of charming young workers beavering away both in the hotel and banqueting suite. We felt very well looked after throughout our stay. Oh and the wedding noise didn’t impinge on the hotel at all - just as well as there are weddings almost everyday at this time of year.

My husband and I had our wedding and Day 2 celebrations at Barberstown Castle on 7th and 8th November 2024 with about 70 of our closest family and friends. It was an absolutely perfect experience that we cannot thank Ted, Sinéad and the Barberstown team enough for. From the very first encounter with Ted and Sinéad, we were blown away by the level of care and attention to detail given to planning our wedding and making sure that everything we were hoping for was looked after. From our beautiful tasting meal in the Barton Rooms Restaurant (with exquisite food, wine and much time given to us by the waiting staff and chefs to talk us through the dishes) to the countless phone calls, emails and in-person meetings, no request or question was too big or too small, and this meant that we had absolutely no concerns when our wedding day arrived about everything going smoothly, meaning that we could fully relax and enjoy the day knowing everything was taken care of. Having had initial consultations with several other wedding venues prior, we were impressed that the very first question we were asked when we first visited Barberstown Castle was what was most important to us for our wedding day (the first time anyone had asked us this) - the answer being that our beloved friends and family would be as well looked after as possible. From that point onwards, everything from Barberstown Castle's side centered around making that happen, which was exactly what we were hoping for. Not only was the venue beautiful and perfectly suited to the needs of our guests, but Ted and Sinéad were incredibly flexible during the planning process and happy to cater to the specific needs of our guests which included everyone from young babies to elderly relatives and many guests with specific dietary requirements and other needs. Nothing was a problem for Ted, Sinéad or Sarah in reservations (who ensured all of our guests had the best of accommodation and that all rooms that catered to our guests' specific needs). It is also worth noting that all of this from beginning to end took just 3 months to organise! On the day itself, everything went off without a hitch. Upon arrival we were immediately introduced to Paddy and his team who looked after the running of the entire event into the early hours of the morning. We had a gorgeous dove release and photoshoot on the grounds of the Castle, followed by a beautiful intimate wedding in Barberstown’s ceremony room adjoining the Banqueting Hall, where our wedding reception was later held. This was perfect for our guests, particularly for those with reduced mobility, as the entire venue was so well organised and nobody had far to go. Ted, Sinéad, Paddy and team were constantly present and so incredibly attentive, making sure that we and our guests wanted for nothing, always making sure that everyone was comfortable, fed and watered and that there was nothing else we needed. My wife and I had Sunday lunch at Barberstown Castle on even date, Sunday 15th December, 2024. The cost of Sunday lunch in the main restaurant is €42 per person. On arrival the staff were very courteous, polite and professional. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful with a log fire burning. A perusal of the menu revealed that there was only a choice of three main courses. We choose salmon but when it was served we discovered that the vegetables were cold and the mass potatoes served with the main course was also cold. My wife had sherry trifle for desert and it was certainly not freshly cooked. It appeared to be lying about in excess of 24 hours. The fact of the matter was that it was inedible. The sherry trifle was absolutely awful and even the presentation was very poor. When my wife made a complaint to a member of staff the response she got was "sorry about that but we are very busy today with Christmas and all." The meal which was served to us did not resemble anything like a Christmas lunch. We will not be returning to Barberstown Castle for Sunday Lunch as out experience today was very distressing. T.J. I had my wedding here yesterday and we had the most awful experience with wedding coordinators and management. Complete gaslighting all the way. Our coordinator Annie quit 5 months before the wedding, prior to that she ignored us when we came for our pre wedding meal. She also never responded to emails. Then after she quit, the manager Richard told us he would take over everything and even be with us on wedding day. Richard only spoke to us one time after that and then ignored our texts. On our wedding day he passed us nodded at us and that was it. He didn’t come talk to us or check in. Paddy however who was there on the day was amazing and we do want to thank him along with Aidan who gave us amazing service at the bar and during our reception. The service team who work during reception and in the morning during breakfast are so kind and we are incredibly thankful for that. After our coordinator left so many things fell through the cracks and our new coordinator Derin and the owner Teds way of handling this was to gaslight and say oh no Annie wouldn’t have told you that. Annie told us we could have the wedding suite in the castle, but Barberstown apparently don’t offer their nicest room to the wedding couple like other hotels do. They did offer me to spend another 800 on it if I wanted to be there, meaning that room was free that night but they didn’t want to honour the word of the original coordinator. Nothing special was done in the other suite they did offer us. Our original coordinator booked my husband a room for the night before the wedding and I had the bridal suite. But when we arrived they couldn’t find the reservation and instead of honouring what we were told, Lisa at reception was very rude and kicked my husband out of the room the morning of and insisted his groomsmen pay immediately for that room, my husband called me and put her on the phone, I was trying to get my makeup done and hair and she was being very rude to me and arguing that it was never booked in the first place when it was. We had several conversations about it with coordinators even the newer one and confirmed we would be able to have breakfast in our seperate rooms morning or the wedding. The coordinator to my face also denied it while I’m standing waiting to go down to get married. Basically trying to convince us that never happened because they messed up. When my husband got upset at being put in this situation they accused him of shouting at a staff member and messing with papers but this did not happen he even asked to see the video recording which they claimed to have and then they backtracked and changed the subject. The owner Ted has no idea how to work with customers. We tried to explain how all this behaviour was unacceptable morning of the wedding and prior to that and he just kept talking about how my husband did this even though he just got upset like a normal groom would and did not do anything they suggested he did. Visited Barberstown Castle last weekend for a birthday party with family and friends , and what a wonderful experience we all had .Firstly , the Staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, and extremely well trained . The rooms were super elegant , spacious and comfortable. We had fabulous dining experience in the Elizabethan Suite , and WOW ! what services from the wonderful Waiters . Drinks in the Green bar , under the supervision of the amazingly helpful Maitre D , a big ‘thank you ‘ to him . The ambiance is just lovely at Barberstown, especially at Christmas, with the open wood fires and festive decorations. I simply could not recommend it enough for a function, break or fine dining lunch or dinner . Our guests were blown away ! Many Thanks to everyone at Barberstown Castle

we had booked two junior suites with dinner in this hotel for a special occasion and received a follow-up email to call and book the dining time slot. we spent days ringing the hotel and only getting a voice mail and never got any call back from the hotel. After a week we eventify got someone to answer the phone and everything went rapidly down hill from there. First we were asked for the booking details and the requests and that the person answered don't deal with that and she would pass it to a college and we would get a call back in a few mins needlessly to say that didn't happen and got a call back almost 6 hours later again we had to repeat the information as it had not been passed on. we asked for to set the time for the restaurant and requested the barter room and got a very sharp no this is only for Formal Guests! I have to say we were taken aback for to be told more or less in this manner we were not good enough for to dine in this restaurant. we then ask the person why this was the case and was told this is not an option for you. we then asked was it that it might be more expensive and if that was the case we were willing to cover any additional charge again we were told its not available to you and your only option was the bar food, we did not book bar food in our booking. I stated this and was promptly told if we did not like this we could cancel our booking and try find another venue. I have to say I was shocked by this attitude and total lack of any respect for their customers and requested that someone from management would call. Again this call never came, having given some time for the call I then wrote an email of complaint to the hotel and after another 10days still no response. This is a horrible way for any hotel to treat is customers with total contempt I am just sorry that I did not read all of the 3, 2 and 1 star trip advisor reviews first before we put ourselves through this horrible experience. Lesson learned Star ratings on hotels do not reflect customer service. I have made ever attempt for to resolve this prior to writing the review as normally i do not write reviews.
