The Kings Arms Hotel

Lovely old building from the outside, but inside it was smelly. Drains maybe? Anyway the bar was cold. This is a locals pub folks. Fair enough, just saying. Soon filled up with cliquey regulars, and if you are an outsider you are made to feel that way.

Booked for a last minute trip to the Cotswolds. Check-in was fine - friendly staff. We weren't expecting a great deal of luxury - it's an old coaching inn. However, the room we had was at the top of a VERY steep set of stairs!! The room itself was small, but adequate. However, the arm on the only chair in the room was extremely wobbly and seemed about to fall off, the toilet seat was hanging off and one of the wall lights didn't work. The shower was pretty useless - no shower curtain or screen. Bed was comfortable. The breakfasts were good, as was the evening meal we had one night.

The hotel is centrally located and a characterful old building. The staff front of house were a credit to the hotel (and to Australia!) - they worked extremely hard and were friendly and attentive. Whilst the service was first-class, we had a very poor night’s sleep in room 10. The bed was uncomfortable and in dire need of replacement; the mattress was worn, lumpy and thin. The room was also very hot. Reception were happy to move us to a different room for our second night, but the lack of sleep took the gloss off our first day in the Cotswolds. We also felt we should have been pre-warned of the very steep steps up to rooms 8-11 (probably a 60-degree angle). This was not a problem for us but those with mobility problems could encounter real difficulty. Although not entirely surprising in such an old building, it would be prudent for the hotel to highlight the difficulty of access upon booking.
