September 2024 We stayed in room 204 – Suite del Duca (Suite with Terrace), and absolutely loved it! Staff are extremely helpful, pleasant, and professional - service is phenomenal. Palazzo del Duca is in the traffic-restricted part of town. Well in advance of our stay, Palazzo del Duca helped arrange for parking in a nearby parkade. They also stayed on top of this arrangement - when the parking garage later closed (months before our arrival) and could no longer keep our car, Palazzo del Duca communicated this to us and suggested an alternate arrangement, which they helped us book. Very impressive. The suite itself was incredibly beautiful – spacious and well designed, with a high arched ceiling, plenty of light, super comfortable bed and linens, lovely walk-in shower, gorgeous tub, and … best of all, the well-furnished private terrace – wow, what a treat! It’s the only room in the hotel with a private terrace and we enjoyed it immensely. Although room service is pricey, we enjoyed an aperitivo on the terrace more than once! The staff recommended Annina 1937 for supper, and it was excellent! Private walking tour of the Sassi was a highlight – we arranged for this through the hotel, with a special request for Sara as our guide as she came highly recommended by colleagues who previously visited. Sara was very knowledgeable, and we enjoyed spending time with her. Matera has a remarkable history, having a guide helped us appreciate it that much more. Opportunities for improvement – these are very minor: the large statement-like chandelier in our suite had many burnt out bulbs – taking away from the photogenic opportunity it otherwise presents; an in-room coffee machine would have been much appreciated, as would bath/lounge robes. A couple of tips: We made a spontaneous decision to hike across the gorge and to the top of the other side as we saw so many people doing. While it is relatively short, about 2 miles there and back, much of the ground is quite loose, so have a care and be sure to wear supportive footwear. We carried a packable backpack with bottles of water and electrolyte tablets and were glad to have them with us. It took us 2 hours to complete. Much of Matera’s steps are slippery (even when not wet) – proper footwear, with good grip, is essential. Matera is wonderfully walkable, provided one has no mobility issues. Palazzo Del Duca is just around the corner from Piazza Duomo, the main square, in the heart of the old town of Matera, a perfect starting point for your explorations. Take advantage!
