The Lodge at Mammoth Cave

The Sunset View lodge was clean and comfortable. The place is exactly how it is advertised; motor lodge/motel but it is located in the park, walking distance to the visitor center, cave tours, gift shops and restaurant. There is parking right in front, views of the woods, right on the accessible paved trails and windows you can open. We had plenty of towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash in shower,TV and mini fridge. My family was happy with our overnight stay. The only thing I would caution is the advertised roll away bed available, not sure where one would even fit a roll away bed in that room! The room is pretty small.

Stayed in a Historical Cabin and was very pleasantly surprised. Not exactly the Four Seasons in terms of amenities but that's not why you stay here. Cabin looked to have been renovated in the last couple of years and was impeccably clean (and smelled clean). A bit of paint peel on the chair rail but it just added charm to the whole thing. Keep in mind: no wifi, no heat (a bathroom space heater), window A/C only, no TV. We were looking for a quiet getaway and this served the purpose wonderfully. Main activity, when not hiking or cave touring, was sitting outside in the chairs watching the deer. If you want a clean, comfortable, relaxing break from the modern world, I recommend these cabins. Note: it is about a 100 yard walk from the parking area via sidewalk.

We stayed in a Sunset Terrace room. I always check hotel rooms for bugs as soon as I check in. There were bed bug stains on the sheets under my fitted sheet. Please check your rooms if you are staying there. We had to request a new room. The housekeepers need to check more thoroughly

We had rooms in the Sunset Cottages. First the positives. They are big and roomy with lovely views of the forest. They have heat/air conditioning and windows you can open. It was nice to sit outside at night in front of our room. The park’s visitor center is a short walk away and they have plenty of parking. There is a refrigerator in the room too. Now, the negatives, no tissue in the room, the bathroom needed a good cleaning from top to bottom. Hair was on the tiles of the shower, dirt on the tiles around the toilet, and dirt on the bathroom door. We have stayed at a few National park hotels and they are all old so that’s what we expected. I couldn’t decide between average and poor for a rating due to the bathroom. Almost forgot, could not get warm water in the sink faucet.

We stayed in the Subset Terrace cottages because the lodge is undergoing renovation. It was serviceable, basically clean. The bathroom was well-stocked. There is a mini- fridge & microwave. The rooms are not sound proof and the phone didn't work. (Which matters because wi-fi is weak or non-existent.) We arrived after dark and had trouble finding where to check-in because registration is in a temporary place due to the lodge renovation. Some better signage would have been very useful. We will go back but not until the lodge reopens.

It is always very convenient and cost effective to stay in national parks and here is no exception. We had a star chamber lantern tour booked at 6:15 pm which ended at 8:45 pm and we were able to break off and walk 5 minutes to the cabin. The stars are lovely and we saw a deer on our way back. Staying in the historic cabins also meant no long distance drive back into the park in the morning for our 10 am Domes and Dripstones tour, thus giving us time for a walk to sunset point after a long sleep in. Our only complaint was the bathroom door; it stuck horrible and needs a good microplaning! A little hard to have bathroom privacy when to door doesn’t close without brute force!

It is a perfect place to stay when visiting the caves. It is a small walk to visitor center where all tours depart. Very Clean!! Main area with beds is updated and very comfortable. Yes the bathrooms are extremely outdated - but again Very Clean!!!! It is so quiet and peaceful we had a wonderful stay and would definitely stay again!

With the main lodge being closed, we were lucky to get a sunset terrace room as there are only around 20 of them. We’ve gone to many national parks and compared to a place you would stay at Yellowstone, it’s unreal in terms of creature comforts. You get things like satellite tv (no broadcast networks), AC and heat, wireless, refrigerator, and a microwave. They still give you old fashioned keys (why?), and one funny thing they give you a sheet if you need to contact the staff they have the word ‘emergecy’ in there so that didn’t give me much confidence. Now for the drawbacks … the wireless doesn’t work well and I actually got better coverage (I have Verizon) when I turned it off. The room design isn’t good, as there isn’t a closet or even a bar you can put your coat on. In the bathroom, there is only one small shelf and it’s right above the toilet (and the toilet is not fully covered), so I was afraid to put much up there as I was afraid it would fall into the toilet. We ended up getting an ADA room and there is only a small bar to get into the shower. Even with the shower curtain, the water got way too easily out of the shower and into the room so we had to use multiple towels to clean up the mess (at the very least, add a drain in the bathroom). Finally, there was only one vending machine and it was completely out of soda. Now having said all that, we still were happy to be there because the goal is enjoy the area and it was just a quick 10 minute walk to the visitors center. There are also some nice quick trails you can take right off the parking lot, including seeing the memorial for one of the most famous tour guides. So despite the annoyances with the room, we would stay there again.

Decent hotel for being in a National Park. Don't expect wifi to work in your room. Well it might in the main lodge, but that was under renovation. Satellite TV so that was nice, as some lodges don't even have a TV. What you need to be aware of is, since the main lodge was under renovation there is no place in the park to get food after 5pm. We ordered sandwiches from the store and brought back to our room and kept in the refrigerator until we were hungry at night.
