I dropped in for a beverage while dropping off clients who were staying here during their whisky tour. The interior, views and landscape where extremely relaxing. I loved my hot chocolate served in an indulgently oversized and ornate teacup

My husband and I had dinner at this lovely restaurant. The restaurant has very modern minimalist décor, but it is the setting which steals the show. With huge windows overlooking the golf course and sea beyond, we were seated at a fabulous corner table with amazing views of sunset in several directions. Even though there was only raw oysters listed on the menu, the chef was very accommodating, and prepared them perfectly baked with a garlic, butter and crumb topping for me. They were so exquisite that they have spoiled me for any oysters I will ever eat again. My husband had his oysters raw, with a Scotch whiskey luge, and totally enjoyed his as well. The only hiccup was that several of the wait staff were confused about the Scotch whiskey menu, and it took a while until we found the right person to answer my husband's queries concerning the whiskeys offered. I mean we were on Islay, isn't it to drink Scotch that everyone was there? Except me of course who was very happy with my Lussa gin and tonic. All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening, and we would recommend this restaurant whole heatedly.

It is a beautiful hotel in a beautiful location. The rooms are wonderfully appointed. The bed was very comfortable. The staff is gracious and knowledgeable. The facilities are world class, and they have the best whiskey in the world. I will be coming back without a doubt.

Arrived at hotel and we were Ignored in reception for five minutes. By two members of staff … Room was at the end of a corridor where the fire door handle was missing so you couldn’t exit . Bathroom light switch was broken and covered with a ***** of electric tape A maintenance man came to mend our broken patio doors which weren’t broken He stank of smoke - we left the door open to clear the air We were then offered another room which was a suite We were then given keys to another suite and told we couldn’t have room service in that room as it was away from the hotel . We drove to a lodge number 4 into which we walked ( it was unlocked ) and found someone else staying there . We got to the room we were staying in and then had another interruption when someone else knocked on the door and said they were locking a room in the suite leaving us with a disabled room and smaller bed than we had booked . Then they said they were comping our food and then they weren’t . Two and a half hours after reaching the hotel we finally were told yes we could have the rooms we were in but no food was being comped however we could have room service . Wow what an experience | In the new room ( a suite )there was Blood on the floor and mud Kitchen area and door was broken . The Patio doors were also broken . The fire door cupboard in the second room / housing electrics and hot water tank etc on the room was unlocked as well . Wow …

We love Islay and had heard so much about The Machrie after its makeover and so, when my wife was given a voucher to stay there on her retirement we booked up. The booking process was a bit ‘clunky’ as we were trying to book dinner as well as golf and a two night stay. It seemed that none of the departments spoke to each other, and when we followed up we were always answered by a sister hotel in Wales! On arrival, we had a great experience of check in and the room was lovely with modern appliances and nice toiletries….very relaxing. Dinner on the first night was really tasty and was served (very quickly) by a really nice young recruit from Glasgow who was loving his time on Islay. All good, if rather pacey instead of leisurely. Up the next day for breakfast…..and this is where the hotel, charging £450 a night for B&B really let itself down. It took ages for a surly staff member to notice us at the ‘wait to be seated’ sign and allocate us a table. The self-serve buffet was always empty, needing more fresh fruit to be laid out. Staff were not friendly, orders were mixed up and service was slow. We were not the only guests experiencing this. Truly awful……and we were to have breakfast there again the next day! We golfed at The Machrie and what a joy that was. Delightful course in immaculate condition with wonderful views. Absolutely excellent. We decided to dine out the second night and after a super comfortable sleep, faced the same nightmare for breakfast. We raised this at the time and believe poor attitude coupled with poor training leads to high turnover of staff (most were new) and a dreadful reputation (which we later discovered is known throughout the island). Having completed my survey on the ferry home in which I said I wouldn’t be back and would not recommend it to friends, I got an e mail back saying thanks for doing the survey and look forward to you coming back! I have delayed this review to see if the survey was picked up but it hasn’t been and so I’m now giving my views. I can only say to the owners (ex BBC Chairman Glyn Davies and his Baroness wife) thank you for the investment and improvement to this hotel, thank you for the improvements on the golf course but don’t expect staff to stay if they are not trained….and with that, don’t expect customers to return

It's dubbed as an International luxury hotel. While our room (the Islay room) was very good and the hotel was spotlesly clean, the service (lax) and restaurant (overcooked lobster amongst others) did not live up to the promise.

The hotel was perfect. Golf is incredible, restaurant very good and the staff accommodating. Very nice, clean rooms.
