Excellent location, right near the front and bus stop right outside. A last minute decision to book a hotel in Ilfracombe. Phoned the hotel direct to book and they kindly told us that they had an Autumn sale on so it would be cheaper to book online. The extremely low price was hardly believable and when we arrived we decided to book a third night. Having read reviews ranging from great to not great at all, we’d been prepared to accept the worst for the bargain price. It was a quieter time of the year. We didn’t get any noise from anywhere either inside or outside of the hotel. We had a large double with a view on the second floor. The hotel is old and tired and some people wouldn’t be happy with the lower standard compared with more modern hotels. If you’re one of those I’d advise you pay a lot more and go somewhere else. While there was room for improvement in the cleanliness of nooks and crannies we felt that overall the room was clean and we had no concerns. All of the staff were so friendly and helpful. There was entertainment each night we were there although we didn’t partake.

Ended up not staying! Here's why... Coachload of 75 years plus arrived and took us ages to get in! Only one small lift, on the side of the hotel of the older people and we were the only couple on the old side of the building. Many stairs (hard on the knees and back!) Old smell of when it used to be a smoking allowed building. Entered the door... One small central light, high ceilings, so dark and dingy. Smelled musty. Very basic furniture. Curtain track, longer at one side than the other. Didn't dare close the curtains, which were old, in case many insects or spiders fell out! Holes in windows and coving along with cobwebs and chipping paint. The bath had a wooden beading rail along it!!! Wooden!!! Dining room was lit with dull orange lighting. Food was poor. Dry chicken with mash potatoes, cabbage and carrots, covered in gravy! Sticky toffee pudding was nice. Rang a b&b and left!

We didn't stay and went to a lovely B&B. The woman on reception was friendly. Our room, on the left of building was up flights of stairs, no lift at that side. Room was dark and dingy, smelled musty and 'old'. There were cobwebs, holes in the window frames, and coving. A terrible wooden beading on the bath edge! Wooden!!! Basic table and chairs and un matched furniture. We did have a meal we'd paid for, consisting of dried chicken, mashed potato, carrots and cabbage drowned in gravy. Served in the dull orange 'restaurant'. Staff were friendly enough, but didn't offer us, or ask if we wanted any drinks.

Went on Caladonian coach and best holiday and experience ever. Mandie (driver) was amazing and did a brilliant job, even went round everyones table on the evening and took time to talk to everyone. Thankyou to Charlie, Lynne, Julie, (front of house). Young Nathan (bar staff) and gorgeous John (waiter) and all the rest of the hotel staff at this hotel. The meals were fantastic, 3 course evening meal with choices. Excellent. Entertainment was great. Will be going back next year definitely. Highly recommend. For the price we paid with Caladonian it was amazing. Ilfracombe is lovely. Lynmouth and Barnstable (excursions) were great.

Grand hotel is only in name :) without the term "grand" it would be much better. The hotel has its years and you can see and smell that the building is already old. The service is very nice and polite, very good breakfasts. Very good location...
