The Stag on the River

A very pretty and welcoming pub with friendly and helpful staff - full marks here. But the food was average - perfectly acceptable but not outstanding and certainly not cheap by pub standards. The steak pie had good quality meat but was not particularly well seasoned, and the lemon tart (the special of the day) was oversweet and too soft. Its a nice place to visit on a warm day, with a pretty garden by the river. But not a place to make a detour to just for the food.

Husband I stayed for 2 nights and had a really nice break. The Hotel is in a lovely quiet location with the river Wey running alongside. There is a nice garden with plenty of seating together with a covered area which is stylishly laid out with sheepskins & flowers. Our room was compact but comfortable, the bed was really nice. Everything was spotlessly clean and the Nespresso coffee machine and fancy teas were a nice touch. Along the corridor was a fridge with small bottles of fresh milk for us to help ourselves to, again, very nice - so much better than plastic UHT milk. Complimentary bottled water and even a bottle of local ale (although just one between 2 of us!) were also nice touches. Breakfast had to be chosen the night before, not a problem for us and the choices were great, delicious & high quality. We had dinner on our 2nd night which was really very high quality. We eat out a lot and like to think we are "foodies" - so nice to have an interesting menu with a variety of dishes all using local produce and clearly all made to order. No microwave meals here! All in all we had a very pleasant stay and applaud the friendly, professional staff on the overall atmosphere they have created - one of stylish comfort without losing the cosy country feel.

On the face of it fantastic place and when you get to the location all good… However the restaurant area really needs to have a review ! 1. On a spring deal and it includes a bottle of English fizz as I was on my own asked if I could exchange for a pint - no was the answer. 2. Next table when they asked swooped for another bottle of wine. 3. No organisation as was asked 3x by 3 people if I’d ordered! 4. Chicken in the pie was a bit pink most wasn’t … mentioned this but was told that’s the way it should be ? 5. Next table had wrong order served was told it would be 5 mins to sort 30 mins later it came out 6. So much potential but needs some control and polish in the restaurant and kitchen areas. 7. Trying to attach a waiter was hard work ! Having said that nice place

Lovely stay, with a very warm welcome, great food, spotless, comfortable bedroom, with everything you need, including fresh milk! The staff all go the extra mile and cannot be faulted. The setting is idyllic and the beer garden is the perfect place to sit and enjoy an al fresco moment, when the sun shines. I will be back!

We needed a central location to meet family, and this was ideal - what a find . Super friendly staff, a gorgeous quirky room and a lovely ambience to the Inn - and very quiet considering that it is not far from the main road. We will definitely come back again in the summer to enjoy the lovely walks along the river.

The Stag on the River is set in a beautiful location. However, the building in Jan is cold - we sat with coats on most of the time. The food was not great. The beef was really fatty; risotto was not how I've seen a risotto presented before. And overall the food lacked excitement. Will we go back - no. Staff were polite.

We visited this restaurant a few years ago and it was lovely however today on our way home from London on a family day out we decided to book a table to pop in as it's just off the A3 on the route home. When we arrived we were slightly early so we were happy to take a different table in the bar area as it was closer to the log fire also. After ordering all the food we waited when my two girls were bought starters from the adult menu, not children's as requested, they then had to remake them so they had to wait for a further 10 minutes. the rest of the family had eaten theres by the time the new starters arrived. Mains followed after and this was all ok apart from the meals are very small and not the best value for money. We then asked for the bill after we finished and we noticed we had been charged for two adult burgers instead of children which almost doubles the price of two mains at which point I was getting annoyed by the level of service and mistakes being made I then noticed that a service charge of 12.5% had been added on which equated to an extra £20 on the bill I asked for this to also be removed and the lady just grabbed the receipt huffed and walked off not happy by our request for the removal of service charge. Now my reasons for requesting the service charge to be removed are that our starters were mixed up our mains were small and were not a great meal and then our bill was mixed up again, oh and not to mention the lack of service at the table or check-ins, apart from dropping our meals off we didn't see any other the service so how did that justify £20 Overall a disappointing visit with very moody ignorant staff and we for sure will not be returning in future.

A well presented picturesque pub beside the River Wey. Our room was comfortable with tea and coffee making facilities and all the essentials in the bathroom, which had a large shower, fresh towels and flannels supplied daily, nice touch. However, our stay was marred by shortcomings in the bar/restaurant. The blurb says the menus are “Best enjoyed next to a roaring fire on a crisp autumn day”. Our 3 night stay coincided with the first cold autumn days. There were no blazing fires or central heating in the public areas during our stay at breakfast or dinner, we had to dine wearing fleeces! On the food front, there was no mint sauce for the Sunday roast lamb, at our first breakfast there was one yoghurt left, we asked for more, there were no more. Neither did any appear at our next two breakfasts. Our Monday dinner had soup served in a cold dish and a burger that was tepid at best, both were reheated on request. This is a lovely pub to stay at, but let down by lack of organisation from the management on catering and building comfort. I have expressed my comments directly to the Stag, but as yet have had no response.

On the face of it, the Stag offers a good combination to visitors - a few, smartly furnished rooms over a restaurant by a river. I found the staff unfailingly welcoming and helpful, but rooms are too small, there is no air-con or room fridge, and no rooms have baths. This is essentially a restaurant which offers a few rooms, but they are not cheap. Car-parking is very poor at peak eating times, and you might find there are no spaces. The wi-fi is very slow and imperfect (2Mb), and the local mobile signal is very weak, oscillating between 3G (no good for anything) and a thin 4G signal. So hotspotting was really hit and miss. Clearly the mobile signal is not the hotel’s fault. There is not too much noise from the outside restaurant area except at peak departure times, when I felt behaviour tended towards being too noisy. There is, however, fairly constant background noise from the nearby A3. Breakfast is excellent and served in the restaurant downstairs with plenty of options. I slept well in the comfortable beds, but generally felt that the hotel did not deliver great value for money.
