As this motel was well recommended by most reviewers, I thought we’d give it a go. Our phone booking was made for the following Tuesday but no deposit was requested. On arrival about 3:30PM, the place was deserted. I phoned the same mobile number and I was told room 3 was for us and I was given a four digit code to access the key. The pleasant room met or exceeded expectations (a large bathroom) but with a few quirks. The TV would not work but, as there was no one there to assist, but I managed to get it going with a switch on its side. There was lots of coffee and sugar sachets, but no teabags or milk. Three mini bottles of conditioner, but no shampoo. No detergent, so we were unable to wash the few dishes we used, etc. The much touted licensed restaurant was far from operating, and how could it with us as the only guests? The only other option for a feed that night was the pub located about 500 mts away, but it is closed on Monday and Tuesday nights. Fortunately, we’d had an ample lunch and had brought some Muesli bars for such occasions. With no one on site when we left the next morning, we received a call later that day requesting payment which I did over the phone. Grong Grong seems a dead small town during winter, but this accommodation is worth considering, as long as you know what to expect. Although the motel is well off the highway as well as a busy railway line, you can still hear the trucks and trains when outside, but thankfully, not inside. Few motels along the Newell can claim that!
