While Hotel Berna may not be the fanciest, most modern hotel in town, it does many, many things right. First, the hotel is very well located if arriving or leaving from the main train station... about a 5 minutes walk, or even less, when you know where you are going. With the building only having a very small elevator, those with large luggage may have to take a few trips up and down to the floor where the check-in desk is for the actual hotel (a few other floors are used for "rentals", some managed by the hotel). Staff at check-in were very friendly and helpful, providing basic orientation of the property and the area that we were in, and some of the add-on services offered by the hotel. As we had been on a flight to Rome from North America and then the train to Florence, our priority was to go to our room to relax a little bit. The room had a nice sofabed setup and ready to use for our child and the main bed was large enough and comfortable for two adults. The simple square layout of the main room actually makes the room quite spacious and easy to move around. Also, the floor not being carpet, we were less concerned about leaving all our luggage on the ground to unpack and repack... and this was also a good thing for my allergies. We quickly figured out the AC and while there was an extreme heat warning outside, the room was comfortable overnight with the AC on. The bathroom might be the least impressive part of the room. Older, small and the shower head somewhat broken, which would make water splash everywhere if you did not use the shower creatively. Furniture in the room is minimal, simple, and old - but then again, our goal was just to visit the city and have a nice clean room for one good night of sleep and the hotel delivered. While we were tempted by the on-site breakfast, we knew we would not be ready on time as we would still be adjusting to the time difference, and also had to be at a designated meeting spot for a tour by a specific time... let's just say that there are a few convenient fast food options nearby. For the price paid, Hotel Berna is a really nice find in Florence and would personally go back. It is not the most impressive place, but it delivers the basics flawlessly.
