This stay was heading to be a disaster of an experience, with blame shared by myself, BW reservations, confusing and bait-switching online pricing and the nutty desk clerk I managed to get on the phone once (in five tries) in advance of my arrival. Long story short: Week-in-advance pricing for a weekend stay in a luxurious in-room whirlpool bath was $250 per night, non-refundable reservations were $70 less. What does rational person do? On Monday I booked at the refundable rate and marked my calendar for Thursday to cancel and rebook at the lower rate, if the room was available. It was – but on Thursday, when the website confusingly defaulted the arrival date as “today,” not the Friday arrival I wanted. I was in a hurry, didn’t notice, and booked the wrong night. My bad. But things went downhill fast when I tried to correct my mistake enroute … and reached a night clerk who clearly had no clue how to do her job. She asked if she could call me back but never did, and several calls I placed afterward never were picked up. A call from my car to a Best Western reservationist gave me availability for a whirlpool room at the hotel. Wonderful!! The cost? $100. Fantastic!! Why the heck wasn’t I given that price in the first place? I booked it, and hoped for the best … … and when I finally arrived late-evening at the property, there were no whirlpool rooms to be had. The two double beds I was given was perfectly acceptable, even at the $100 I was at that point willing to pay, but certainly not the $100 + $180 = $280 that at the moment was on my credit card. The next day, the morning desk clerk (and after returning home, the property manager) made sure I only paid the $100 (with tax) I felt was reasonable. Their efforts were worth adding back two stars to this review, for a five-star room experience … especially if I had that whirlpool to enjoy after eight tiring hours on the road. But would I stay there again? Not if I could be sure I could get the room I want – for a fair price, the first time booked.
