The Downtown, a Coast Hotel

We were happy to find the Downtown Hotel to spend one night in Dawson City. It was nice, clean with rooms on the smaller side. Nice and quiet and room darkening curtains too. Highly recommend the saloon that’s attached. Good food and the hubby’s had to try the Sour Toe cocktail. Very walkable city and you feel as though you’ve gone back in time.

Quirky hotel in the centre of Dawson City. Room was very clean tidy and comfortable although a little warm. Fans were provided. Tea/coffee/fridge and microwave available in room. Location was perfect for downtown. Staff were helpful and maid service was offered daily. Would definitely stop again.

Ok.... this hotel wasnt TERRIBLE but it wasnt good by any means. We had really crappy luck. We arrived at 2am only to find out there had been a planned power outage from 11pm to 5am leaving us with NO lights (they didnt keave flashlights either), and no hot water for a shower which is exactly what we needed/wanted after spending 15 hours in a car (one day of travel). Even if the hotel was beautiful, it was about 1000 Effing degrees! Our ceiling fan didnt work either and no AC at all (we were in the building across the street though so idk about the main building). Toilet was extremely close to the wall too which also had the towel rack on it so washroom use was not at all comfortable as you always had towels rubbing against you (im also a 5'5" 150 pound woman.... not large by any means so i can only imagine how uncomfortable it would be for a bigger person). I definitely wouldn't be staying here again, especially for the price. It was about $270 ish dollars a night i believe. We are still here but so far we've gotten no discount (which we will be trying to get). The town is GORGEOUS and i 100% recommend coming here, but maybe skip this hotel. The restaurant (The Sourdough Saloon) was pretty good! The food was good and my spouce did the Sour Toe shot. Super cute and tasty and quick for the food, but the service was scarce (we were ready to leave for a long time and i ended up having to ask for the bill at the bar) and confusing. We werent greeted right away and there were no signs to seat yourself so we kinda felt stupid for the first minute of walking in, but seated ourselves and they did serve us.

This is a comfortable hotel in Dawson, and reasonably priced. On the ground floor is a restaurant and bar-bistro. My room was clean, comfortable and had all the usual facilities, perhaps better than one might expect in a remote community. There is an airport shuttle, a big plus! Remember that in Dawson there are boardwalks (I believe that is the technical term) and there are steps to the hotel, so mobility-impaired people need to check on this. But this is the case throughout the town, given that roads are not tarmaced and the extremes of climate. I enjoyed my stay here and can recommend it.

Staying in Dawson for firefighting, was low on options due to it being the busy time for tourism season. Spent 3 nights here, wasn’t terrible but certainly wasn’t worth the $250/night for the room. I had a room in the ‘annex’, which was definitely not clear upon booking that it’s a completely separate building from the main hotel down and across the street. Room was clean and furnished with new and modern settings, but the shower was small and obviously poorly installed. There was water on the floor of the bathroom from when I checked in to when I left. No windows in the room I was given in the annex, and the community laundry machines were right outside my door. To be clear, not a laundry room next to my room, the machines were out in the open 5 feet from my door. Also, didn’t receive any housekeeping services in my 3-day stay. I’m not a fancy lad, and I understand that this is Dawson City. Just expected better for the price point and the name.

On a very hot afternoon we stopped in for a cold beer and a burger. The food was as expected for a bar, the beer was nice and cold. The problem we had was with whom we presumed was the owner/manager/supervisor. This loud buffoon sat at his little Reserved table in the middle of the dinning room and loudly spoke, for all to hear, at the staff, his friends and customers. If you see someone sitting at the reserved table in the middle of the restaurant, seat yourself as far from him as you can.

Ok, so. We MEANT to go to Dawson for the weekend. That didn’t happen. Let’s start off with the telecommunications blackout for 13 hours when we arrived. No phone/internet. At all. Then the flood, bridge washout, and road collapse leading to the closure of the highways. For a WEEK. So we got stranded. In Dawson. The Downtown Hotel became our new “home away from home”. The room was really clean and comfy, liked the beds, had what we needed, but the walls are a little thin. You hear everything. From the other rooms to the girl and her 3am drama filled puke filled sobbing pity party in the back ally. (Her friend was such a trooper tho). I mean, we got used to it. If you live with family, not much different I guess. Not super loud? But it’s there. The staff though, now the staff are top notch. Boy did they try so hard to make us comfortable and happy during the week of madness. So nice, friendly, great to chat to, wealth of knowledge about the town, and loads of gossip about updates about our watery doom. The bar was pretty good too, nice food there. So yeah, our extended stay was unexpected, but the hotel did their best to make sure we didn’t go bonkers. 5/5.

Very clean and comfortable. All the staff where Pleasant and very helpful. Restaurant was clean and food was very good. Found everything I needed was very fast. I was there for over a month and was one of the best places I have stayed at.
