I hadn’t been to a wedding feast in twenty years because all my friends and family got married long ago, and their children aren’t planning weddings yet (or maybe they don’t plan to invite me). So, the invitation to my wife’s family’s wedding brought me immense joy. Out of the three hundred or so guests, we only knew a handful, so we dusted off our long-dormant social skills and made some wonderful new acquaintances. The wedding was lively, a mix of Slavonian, Herzegovinian, and patriotic elements (the Lord’s Prayer, kulen and prosciutto, the national anthem, soup, kolo dance, boiled meat, Škoro, sarma, Mate Bulić, roasted lamb and pork, Thompson, and countless colorful cakes), but also global and liberal (a priest from Benin, a guest from India, Bela Ciao, and a flag bearer in a peach-colored suit), as befits the year 2024. The bride and groom were the most beautiful and tallest couple in the world (together standing about four meters tall), the band was amazing, and the atmosphere was like what Split will feel when Hajduk finally becomes the football champion of Croatia. The festive hall Mima of the Đakovo Hotel turned out to be the perfect venue for such a celebration. After experiencing all this, one feels like getting married all over again – even if it’s to the same wife!
