Excellent location next to ski lift at Sun Valley. 3 mins walk to the local bus station with buses going to Nagano Station direct (express service) or Yudanaka station.
Room and bath room (2 basins and 1 sink) are spacious - we had 3 futons and 2 single beds for our family of 5. They may be a little dated but very clean. Room has a view to outside snowy forest during our time.
Highlights of our stay:
Half board meals - authentic Japanese! Big portions and lots of pretty and dishes served! Free coffee everyday in late afternoon.
Service was impeccable - the front desk lady (very friendly and excellent service disposition) , and the elderly folks who served in the restaurant - thumbs up!

For some reason they couldn't find my reservation at first, but eventually they gave me a nice room. Location is very close to the station, walkable even during snow. Their breakfast and dinner is ok. Their outdoor onsen is beautiful during snow. But the place is old but well maintained. And for me, unlike other reviews, nobody offered me transport to the monkey park, they said no staff.

Some of the best customer service we've ever experienced. Ms. Abe was wonderful and her English was excellent. The outdoor onsen was perfect, truly beautiful. A big, well landscaped area, truly relaxing. All guests get to reserve 30 minutes of private use each evening, which was wonderful, but you can also go back during men's time, women's time, or mixed if you want to enjoy some more. The breakfast was also very good, and the room was sizeable. This was our favourite stay in Japan.

Incredible staff, they were so helpful to us in getting to and from the hotel. If you want a unique and truly unforgettable experience I would recommend staying at shimaya during your time at Yamonochi.

A hidden gem - definitely worth recommending.
The location is close to station, and walking distance to convenient store.
Staff are very nice and friendly, the food is also delicious. We had two dinners at the hotel; one night sukiyaki and another night shabu shabu. Nutritious, fresh and tasty.

AAVNN HolidayMy stay at this ryokan in Shibu Onsen was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was impeccable. The ryokan features private onsen that can be booked in advance, offering an intimate and serene experience. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters while gazing at the surrounding natural beauty was a highlight of the trip.
The ryokan’s free shuttle service made exploring the area incredibly convenient. We were easily transported to the iconic Snow Monkey Park, the nearby train station, and other local attractions, which added to the seamless experience.
The dining experience was nothing short of spectacular. Both private breakfast and dinner were served in a tranquil setting, with beautifully prepared dishes showcasing the best of seasonal and local ingredients. The flavors were authentic and delicious,

GGastnutzerLocated just within 3min from Yudanaka station, Raki Onsenryokan is run by a Chinese family. As a quiet town on its own, no one was tending to the reception when I arrived, after ringing the bell, a lady came down to help with the check in - very straightforward. I believe the family stays in the same building as they said if we ever needed anything, we could just ring the bell at the reception. Obviously I had booked a room too big for a solo traveller as this was the only room left as ”non-smoking”. Toilet and sink are at two different parts of the room which was a little inconvenient. Ryokan offers free drive (15min) TO snow monkey park, but not return, so please cater at least 35min to walk from park exit to the bus stop. Ryokan also provided a hearty breakfast, overall for the price paid it was a decent stay!

BBryce van de LaarFrom the moment you enter Kokuya Ryokan, be prepared to leave the real world behind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You swap your shoes for slippers at the door and don’t see them again until you leave. You will receive a warm welcome from polite and gentle-mannered staff, get taken up to your beautiful room, and once you’ve changed into your traditional yukata, it’s time to let the relaxation begin. The multi-course dinner will probably be one of the best meals you’ve had in your life, with many unusual textures and flavors to try. The futons are comfortable, and your room is kept toasty warm. There are even skincare products to keep you pampered and moisturized between soaks in the onsen. Honestly, you won’t even need to open your suitcase while you’re there.
The staff will take you through all the logistics when you arrive, but there are some things that might be useful to know in advance.
- The ryokan sends a shuttle to Yudanaka station at about 15:00 to collect new arrivals, so time your journey to take advantage of this benefit.
- The ryokan also offers guests the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park immediately after breakfast the next morning.
- After you leave the ryokan, they will take your luggage down to the coffee shop opposite the station, so you don’t need to worry about those logistics.
- Trains from Yudanaka back to Nagano leave at 12:30 and 15:30.
- The ryokan itself has several private onsens that you can reserve for a 45-minute slot. Because the onsens are on the property, you can go in with your partner or travel companions regardless of gender. It’s a boutique hotel, so you don’t have to worry about not getting access to all the onsens you want.
- The ryokan is on the main road of the Shibu Onsen town. The hotel will give you a key so you can wonder down the main road, visiting any of the public onsens you wish - however, with so many gorgeous and more private onsens in the hotel itself, you probably won’t have time or the desire for this.
- Also, there is a coffee machine in the room! (I was worried about having to survive without coffee, and this turned out to be an unfounded concern).
We had an incredible and totally indulgent time at Kokuya. Experiencing a traditional ryokan is a privilege that you should try at least once if you can. And adding the Snow Monkeys in give the trip a double purpose, making it that much more memorable. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if we had been allowed to linger longer over every course of our dinner.

The place is super grand and 2 onsens. A Instagram worthy one that the males and females get to use it at different timings. The shower stuff in the onsen are mediocre though. No fancy facial stuff for women unlike some other onsens at this price range.
We had breakfast and dinner for the 2 nights. And well worth it. But you have to follow a fixed timing and we felt a bit rushed but otherwise it was really great and service perfect.
We had one the biggest rooms I believe Room 716. Had a sitting area and also a sleeping area. Easily fits 8 persons. We were only 2. In the day they kept the futons and brought it out at night. Towels changed every night.
There is a van that goes straight to Mount Yokoteyama ski resort. The receptionist didn't seem to know about it but you could try to Google. It was a complimentary ride to and fro if you bought the lift tickets. Took only like 30 mins to get there. You can get rentals at hotels there.

A Der Chef ist gut in Englisch, der Kommunikation ist ohne Probleme (der Chef hat keine Konferenz);
B Im Zimmer gibt es ein Badezimmer, sehr bequem (die meisten Menschen sind öffentlich, nicht bequem)
C. In der warmen Stadt ist es sehr bequem zu essen;
D. Die Tür ist die Station und der Berg ist bequem zu skizieren.
E Innen- und Außenwärme sind sehr stark und leistungsfähig;
F Chef ist sehr nett, um einen Service für den Empfang/Versand/zu Snow Monkey Park zu bieten (dies ist sehr wichtig für den großen Snowfliegenden Thompo Thompoo, einige Menschen sind nicht bereit)
Ein Wort, kommen Sie zum Skigebiet, wählen Sie das große Haus!

GGastnutzerDas erste Mal fühlte ich japanische Mais, sehr charakteristisch, die Aussicht ist sehr schön.
Das Zimmer ist sehr groß, die Klimaanlage ist heiß, die Leute fürchten, dass es nicht so heiß ist, das Warmgebet wird viel besser, das Kunbu-Mahl im Zimmer ist sehr lecker, und ich habe auch einige gekauft, wenn ich gehe.
Die Suppe ist eine Gebührenbegrenzung.
Die Kleider im Zimmer sind vergleichsweise fettig.
Das beste ist, dass das Hotel einen Transferservice bietet, und am nächsten Morgen können Sie ohne Gepäck direkt an den Parkplatz an den Kaufwagen anrufen, um das Hotel zu holen. Das Hotel wird Ihnen helfen, die Menschen direkt von den Kaufwagen an den Parkplatz in Thompton zu nehmen, Das ist für die Freizügigkeit sehr bequem!

GGastnutzerIch beschwere mich selten über andere, wenn ich Bewertungen für B&Bs schreibe, weil ich denke, dass die Dienstleistungsbranche nicht einfach ist, und ich versuche, so oft wie möglich Gutes zu sagen. Aber dieses Mal muss ich mich über dieses hier beschweren! Wir waren viermal in Yudanaka und haben in acht verschiedenen B&Bs übernachtet. Die ersten drei Male boten die Geschäfte Abhol-/Bring-/Schneeaffenpark-Dienste an, also haben wir dieses Mal nicht im Voraus bestätigt. Unerwarteterweise bieten einige Geschäfte diesen Service nicht an (sehr wenige), Tenkawaso ist eines davon! Nachdem ich am Bahnhof Yudanaka angekommen war, rief ich den Chef an und nach einem halben Tag Mühe (der Chef sprach nicht gut Englisch, daher war die Kommunikation schwierig) fuhr er endlich los, um uns abzuholen und alles lief reibungslos. Am Morgen unserer Abreise schneite es heftig. Wir baten den Chef, uns zum Bahnhof zu bringen, aber er lehnte rundweg ab und sagte, sie würden keinen Abholservice anbieten (sogar für das Taxi zu bezahlen, sei keine Option) und würden uns nicht helfen, ein Taxi zu rufen (es war schwierig, am Telefon durchzukommen, und sie sprachen Japanisch). Später trafen wir eine vierköpfige australische Familie, die darum bat, einen Tag im Voraus abgesetzt zu werden, aber auch abgelehnt wurde (sie sagten, es sei unglaublich, dass der Chef tatsächlich zum Bahnhof kam, um uns abzuholen). Später baten wir einen japanischen Freund, ein Taxi für uns zu bestellen, und auch sie dachten, der Chef sei gemein! Am Ende konnten wir nur unsere Koffer tragen (der Boden war mit Schnee bedeckt und wir konnten sie nicht ziehen), 8 Minuten laufen und kamen an der Bushaltestelle an. Wir warteten 25 Minuten im schweren Schnee (der Bus hatte 20 Minuten Verspätung) und eilten in letzter Minute, bevor der Zug losfuhr, in den Wagen. Der ganze Vorgang war aufregend und traurig! Ich hoffe, dass jeder dies vermeiden kann oder zumindest im Voraus nach dem Abhol-/Bringservice fragt. Die meisten Gastfamilien haben dieses Problem nicht, aber es wird sehr lästig, wenn Sie darauf stoßen!

YYvesPI only stayed one night in this beautiful ryokan and in Yamanouchi but I could easily have stayed longer, as there seems to have trekking opportunities in the area. The ryokan itself is great on all levels: clean, quiet at night and has an authentic feel. The staff is very helpful and speaks fluent English. When you arrive, it will provide you with traditional Japanese clothing in which you'll wander by the streets, go to restaurants and most importantly, explore the 9 public and free onsen in the village. I slept in a 3 bed dormitory and hadn't slept so well for several days. A free shuttle service will bring you to the next bus station (perhaps train station as well)

They gave me yukata and towel and changed it every day. I had a tea and enjoyed it on my balcony. I tried a futon at first time in my life.
I had my own reserved table for breakfast.

Actually staff was so polite! It is seems like you are someone important.
Actually the only one minus that you can't go to all 9 Shibu Onsen's baths, but just to 9th bath only. But the hotel has its own bath even open-air.
It was really nice and comfortable accommodation.
