Definitely not an experience I was expecting to have with the Luxury Collection, given my last one at the Hotel Ivy in the Twin Cities went smoothly and was full of pleasant surprises. This one, unfortunately, had several unpleasant ones. Upon check-in, we asked to be upgraded to a suite. That was not granted, which was understandable, given the hotel was fairly heavily booked out because of a wedding (that we were attending). They gave us an opportunity to upgrade the following morning, though. We did find out, though, that the only rooms in the category we booked (entry-level with balcony) would've been on the first or second floor, and because we put in a request for a higher floor under reservation notes, it was a little disappointing to not be granted that. We did, however, settle for a downgrade, which didn't include a balcony, but was on the seventh floor. We were told by Maggie, who seemed to be a shift supervisor of sorts, that we could come to her the next morning if we still needed an upgrade to a suite/potentially a presidential suite. That was much appreciated, but ultimately we decided not to take that offer. Upon arrival at the room, it was slightly smaller than expected of a luxury hotel of this caliber, with borderline-claustrophobic ceiling heights (though this could just be because it is an older property), little dust-prone crevices, and a dark color scheme, which further minimized the already low level of natural light in the room, and made the space feel even smaller. There were some nice touches to the room, including some ambient lighting, a decently-sized marble bathroom with a soaking tub, and a very, very comfortable bed. On other positive notes, room service was prompt, though the food hovered slightly above mediocre. Housekeeping was decent, at least for the room cleaning they performed DURING our stay (more on that later), and the hotel's personnel were always pleasant to deal with. Maggie, who I mentioned before, checked on us throughout our stay, making sure we were doing okay, and had a great sense of humor. We also had encounters with several bellmen and valet people, all of them very friendly. The highlight of our stay was the hotel's key selling point--the events venue. We were there to attend a wedding, after all. I did have high expectations for the bells and whistles in the first place, this being one of the highest-end hotels in Charlotte, but I was still taken aback by some of the venue work. When I tell you that the pre-function area and ballrooms are stunning, believe it. The centerpiece sweeping staircase against the windows descending into a reception drinks area was possibly my favorite spot in the entire hotel. And the decoration team for the hotel was also amazing--they managed to embellish the ballrooms in extravagant, Crazy Rich Asian-esque style. It's among the most beautiful hotel wedding setups I've seen yet. But what immediately drove my rating from 4 stars to 3 (though 2.5 is perhaps more ac
