I write this with some trepidation because it is inevitable that the owner will feel offended and wish to point out that everyone else thinks Airds Farm is fantastic, hence the plethora of five star reviews, but sadly we do not share other guests' experience. We are very selective in where we stay and so it was precisely these glowing reviews that prompted us to book for four nights to potter in the area on our return from a week in Northern Ireland. Indeed, it is because I rely so much on Trip Advisor myself that I feel obliged to pop my head above the parapet and endorse the only previous negative review of this establishment (which I'd not previously spotted as it's in Dutch and one has to select 'All languages' to read it) which simply said [in terms] they thought it below par for the price. As a seasoned TA reviewer [giving four or five star ratings some 95% of the time] I would normally take a single comment like that from a new contributor with a large pinch of salt, but management responses to criticism can be very revealing in themselves and had I seen this one at the outset then I would have gone elsewhere. Airds Farm is conveniently located off the A713 with easy access into Castle Douglas. We stayed in Room 3 which is a large double-aspect room with a lovely view, so on the plus side it's light and airy, but the bathroom was very small and [save for the shower] rather gloomy; the wi-fi in the room non-existent (despite the presence of an extender at the top of the stairs); and the twin beds [in our opinion] particularly uncomfortable. Access is tricky, especially for anyone with mobility issues, so a handrail on the upper sections of the staircase would be a helpful addition. Breakfast [ordered the night before] was limited but nicely cooked. Even the negatives wouldn't matter too much in the ordinary course because they add character - which is one of the reasons we like farmhouse B&Bs - but one has to get the basics right and, apart from the beds, the main issue we had was that we didn't feel welcome. Others say they DO feel at home here, so perhaps we just happened to be staying at a difficult time for the owner (as in my arguably biased opinion I’d have thought we were model guests, being senior citz who generally keep themselves to themselves), but whatever the reason we certainly didn’t enjoy our stay. The upshot was that decided to cut our losses and return home after three nights, even though we were obliged to pay for four. FWIW l've given both the other places we stayed in on our trip five stars, so make of that what you will.
