We recently stayed for two nights in "le nid" (the nest) the bedroom that's at the tippity-top of this narrow, 15th century, half-timbered house. Upon stepping into the building, I felt like I had been transported through time. Personally, I love an independent hotel that offers a unique experience and L'Oisellerie delivered. The owners are lovely women and we had such fun talking to them in a mix of French and English over breakfast. They served the best croissants we've ever had (and we'd come from Paris!). We felt well taken care of and felt privileged to stay. And really, the tapestries aren't to be missed. Angers is a charming, mid-sized city with abundant shops and restaurants. Perfect for a 1-2 day stay. The only reason I didn't give it an "excellent" is that this hotel really gets its charm from its quirks, so it might not be for everyone. I felt like my 6'2' husband was really wishing I'd picked another room (in his words, he only bumped his head seven times on the roof beams) -- but at 5'5', I found them charming. The toilet is contained in a private room, but there's a deep soaker tub in the room itself. So it's a bit, intimate :) If you find these kinds of details charming, then you too will be glad you stayed. If you prefer something more standardized with a more conventional design, I'm sure that there's a room at the Hilton. I don't think that there is an elevator, so this property isn't a great option for folks with mobility issues -- or if you have limitations, make sure you request a floor on lower floor. I didn't mind getting in my cardio while climbing to the top (I had to work off the croissants after all).
