Jewel Lake Bed and Breakfast

We stayed in the Nautical room for three nights. It is spacious if you have lots of gear and that’s the only positive. The bed has no cover on the duvet and it was never made up during our stay. The mattress comes away from the headboard and the gap swallows pillows making for an uncomfortable nights' sleep. Our room carpet was stained and so were the rugs in the dining room. See the photos for the mouldy bathroom with a potentially disastrous high step up to the toilet and the so called garden view. It’s a self cook breakfast and to be fair the food provided is good. However when other guests are preparing theirs it’s impossible to work around them. That means waiting your turn to cook and eat surrounded by their dirty dishes. There is one small fire extinguisher in the basement. No fire exits are marked and no information is provided about what to do or who to contact in case of an emergency. There is a camera in the kitchen/dining area so you may be filmed without having given your consent. We never saw our hosts and they never replied to our email enquiries once the booking was made and paid for. In my honest assessment the Jewel Bed and Breakfast is not a ‘home from home’ as it claims. I found it grubby, tired and uncomfortable. I cannot recommend it and won’t be returning.

Stayed in the Alaska Suite during my stay. The bed was very comfortable with above-average linens. Whilst the two rooms were clean, the bathroom had several strips of long hairs in the shower and overall, the shower design was extremely odd... even a skinny person would struggle fitting in. I have to agree with other reviews regarding breakfast; there weren't any items like eggs pre-made, so if you want any hot option you would have to make it yourself which isn't typical of a bed and breakfast property. On the positive side, the owner was super friendly and responded to all my text messages within seconds.

Cozy and comfy after a long day of air travel from the East Coast. There are enough breakfast items- look in the fridge! I had yogurt, banana, bagel, coffee and a breakfast bar. There were eggs and cereal as well - hard boiled or fresh to prepare yourself. Bed was great- I had the Denali Room. Very reasonable and perfect for a one night stay to/from the airport. It was very clean when I was there. Ask for upstairs room and no one should be running overhead. Thanks for a great stay. (Very close to COSTCO if you need provisions for your trip!)

Jewel Lake B and B is easy to access from the main roads, though parking space in winter could be a problem. Comfortable stay...nice living room area and cafe tables for breakfast/coffee. I would have liked some paper towels or napkins in breakfast area.

Good things: plenty of parking (our son brought his vehicle as well), nice kitchen for cooking, inexpensive ($120 for the 3 of us) Weird: shower and toilet on 12" riser, actual shower size, water control for said shower Bad: being awakened by someone running back and forth upstairs. The selection of breakfast items. The list of possible breakfasts that is given in the description is not a sample, it is all that is available. The problem is the title of the property "bed and breakfast" lends itself to a more extensive fare. Bathroom condition. It was obviously installed quickly and cheaply and has not had much maintenance.

Our room was dirty. What they claim to be breakfast was granola bars, juices and bread. Although its close to airport and downtown, so location is convinient. Overall it could be better for the price.

First of all, I am comparing this place to others I spent the last two weeks in Alaska all way cheaper and all much better than this one. First the good stuff: it’s a good location from the airport and it has a remarkable stocked pantry to make your own breakfast. The bed was very comfortable and with clean sheets and the TV even had a Hulu account. On the so-so side, Arriving is also a little strange because the side of the property has two big old RVs parked on the back of the property has a collection of items that looks like someone is hoarding discarded stuff but what makes the property very unappealing when you arrive. We did a double take wondering if that was the real place we were staying. Once we realized that was the bed and breakfast, we entered to find the Moose bedroom. You get to this bedroom through a basement kitchen, which is awkward but fine. Then the first thing you see when you open the door to the room is the toilet sitting on a pedestal since you get to the bedroom from the bathroom. Bizarre. The room is in a basement and has a half window overlooking the parking lot under the deck so the light is very limited, but the worst part of all is the bathroom. The bathroom is vey outdated, and has carpet where they were hairs and crumbs (??) from probably the last 50 people that stayed in there. It was pretty filthy to the point that we kept socks on all night to even walk to the bathroom at night. That carpet is at least 20 years and has not been vacuumed in weeks. The shower curtain was also pretty scary though the rest of the bathroom was clean but in major need of renovation with the wall paper falling off in parts of the ceiling. We paid for a weekday in August $262 for the night and that’s where the problem is. The room at $100 to 120 is fine but at that price is completely ridiculous and not worth that money at all when we also stayed at a brand new hotel by Home Depot with a full kitchen for $206 the week before. Keep that in mind for booking. Note: Seeing all the comments from the property manager on any review that has any slightly negative comment, I expect an immediate come back here but I’m just helping other make decisions with their money, like I do. This one was a miss for me.

The breakfast provided was a wide variety and plenty. The common area for the kitchen and living room was nice with a few "tables for two" and a fireplace, a few games, and tea/hot chocolate. We never met the hosts, but didn't feel a need to as they made sure we were well provided for. There is a separate kitchen area in the basement (there are 3? bedrooms down there), but I think that is for staff; not sure. Our room was in the basement. It was strange in that you walked into the bathroom first, then through that was the bedroom. Not a real problem unless your spouse is on the toilet and you want to get into the room and the door is locked. Also, the toilet and shower (and sink) are on a bit of a platform, so you need to step up to use them. Not a big deal; just out of the ordinary. Carpet could use replacing.
