We've been visiting this hotel for about 15 years as we live locally. We recently paid our last visit to the restaurant as the food has become too expensive and, to be honest, not very nice. The staff used to be such a great asset to this hotel. No more. They are inattentive now, preferring to stand around chatting, or just downright rude. However, we also used to visit just for drinks on the terrace or coffees in the lounge. Our last visit on the terrace a couple of months ago, we were ignored by staff for 30 minutes. I had to go up to a young waiter and waitress who were standing up gossiping, to ask if they were going to serve us. They reluctantly did so. Yesterday, we went into the lounge for a coffee. After 20 minutes and no staff to be seen anywhere despite the many customers in there, a waitress came in and gave another couple some hot drinks. We asked if we could place our order with her. She barked 'We don't do table service, you'll have to go to the bar' and walked off. No apology. Just rude. This is the first time in 15 years that table service has been denied to us in the lounge. There are no signs up saying there's no table service, nothing in the menus either. I complained about the attitude of the waitress to a manager and he apologized and said he would speak to the staff member concerned. He offered us two free drinks as an apology, which I declined and went elsewhere, where the staff were friendly and efficient. Not only have the restaurant lost our custom, but the whole establishment has too. Prices too high, food dreadful but, most of all, staff need training and to be told if you're in the hospitality industry, it's be good to be hospitable to the customers, and do your chatting later.
